RE in Year 5
Religious Education
Christianity is at the very heart of our Religious Education, but children are also taught how to respect and understand the religious beliefs of others.
Our non-Christian faith this year is Buddhism
In Year 5 we will look at the beliefs of Buddhist people to getter a better understanding of their religion and religious practices
Unit 1: The Bible
How and why do Christians read the Bible?
Christian Concepts
God – Creation – Fall – People of God – Incarnation – Gospel – Salvation – Kingdom of God
This unit doesn’t particularly emphasise any of the concepts in great depth as it explores the Bible as a whole book and as the source of Christian belief and teaching. This unit builds on knowledge and understanding developed in unit 2.1
The aim of this unit is to:
- deepen children’s understanding of the importance and impact of the contents of the Bible in the lives of Christians.
- to develop further children’s understanding of the significance of holy books in the lives of the people of all world faiths.

In Year 5 we have considered what we are thankful for and took the time to create our own prayers. Here are some examples of our prayers:

Our Rector Susan came to visit us and tell us all about the Bible. She explained to us how it was not just written by one person and gave us a timeline of how it has evolved. We also discussed why the Bible is important to so many people.

Unit 2: The Birth of Jesus
How do our celebrations reflect the true meaning of Christmas?
Christian Concepts
God – Creation – Fall – People of God – INCARNATION – Gospel – SALVATION – Kingdom of God
The aim of this unit is to:
- give children a Biblical perspective on the nativity story.
- deepen children’s understanding of what Christians believe to be the true meaning of Christmas.
- increase pupil’s knowledge and understanding of the place of the incarnation in God’s Big Story
