British Values & Picture News

IMG_5032.jpegBritish Values

At Halsall St Cuthbert’s we follow and teach pupils about British Values which are defined as:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Such values are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a varied and balanced curriculum.

At Halsall St Cuthbert’s we look for opportunities to actively promote British Values through daily collective worship and whole school routines and systems such as electing and running a school council team and pupil led worship team. We promote British values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery include opportunities for exploring these values.

Within school pupils also have the opportunity to explore 'Picture News' -

Picture News is an educational resource that uses a current news story typically supported by a powerful image to:

  • Encourage children to think critically about real-world issues.
  • Spark discussion around values, ethics, and citizenship.
  • Link news stories to British values (e.g., democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance).
